J-School students will have a unique opportunity in the years ahead to be part of a new national initiative to revitalize journalism training. It is led by five of America's leading universities with the support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Knight Foundation. The initiative brings together UC Berkeley, Columbia University, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Northwestern University and the University of Southern California.

Syndicated News Feeds

Some sections of the J-School web site are also available as syndicated RSS/XML news feeds. To subscribe to a news feed, right-click (PC) or Cmd-click (Mac) an XML icon and choose "Copy link to clipboard." You can then paste the link into your feed reader's Subscriptions manager. Some web browsers also include built-in RSS aggregators -- look for an "RSS" link in your browser's URL field.

What is RSS?

RSS, or Rich Site Summary, is a mechanism for publishing story excerpts, headlines, and URLs in a strict XML format that can be read by computer software called an "aggregator" or "RSS news reader." Many people find that using an aggregator saves time by allowing them to see what's being published on many sites at once, rather than surfing to sites sequentially. J.D. Lasica of the Online Journalism Review has written an excellent overview of RSS, titled News That Comes to You. Fagan Finder has another excellent introduction to RSS. Scott Rosenberg of Salon writes that "RSS delivers a long-promised Internet dream."

A Sampling of RSS Readers

Windows: Try SharpReader (free) or NewsCrawler ($24.95).

Mac OS X: Try NetNewsWire (commercial) or NewsFire (free). The Safari web browser included with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) also includes a built-in RSS aggregator.

Cross-platform: Try NewsGator (free) or Bottom Feeder (free).

A definitive list of RSS readers can be found here.
