Master of Journalism (M.J.) Degree Requirements

36 units required for degree *
Require full-time status, and students are required to complete degree in 4 semesters *

18 of the 36 units are required in the following courses:

Law & Ethics (recommended in 1st or 2nd semester)

  students pursuing the Television emphasis are also required to enroll in:

Additional requirements for ALL students

Up to 12 of the required 36 units can be taken in other departments on campus other graduate-level courses (200+ level) or upper-division undergraduate courses (100+ level) can count toward the M.J. degree

Final semester degree requirements

Submission of all required Graduate Division paperwork by announced deadline.
submission of approved Master's Project, with all valid signatures, by announced deadline


* The information above is applicable for students NOT enrolled in concurrent degree programs with other departments at UC Berkeley.
Students wishing to gain experience in TV can enroll in J282 and J283 during their 2nd year (requires two semester commitment).
