Major public events

The Goldman Forum's kick-off event was, "Setting the Agenda? The New York Times and America's View of the World." New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and then Executive Editor Howell Raines discussed the newspaper's approach to world affairs with Dean Orville Schell and Forum Director Mark Danner.

Another signature event was, "How Should We Use Our Power? Iraq and the War on Terror," which took place on the evening President Bush set Feb. 5 as the day when the countdown to an invasion of Iraq would officially begin. The opponents, who squared off at Zellerbach Auditorium, were Goldman Forum Director and New Yorker magazine writer Mark Danner, author of "Massacre at El Mozote" and a professor at the UC-Berkeley journalism school, and Christopher Hitchens, Vanity Fair writer and former Nation columnist, whose latest book is "Why Orwell Matters."

The Goldman Forum-sponsored panel on "Weapons of Mass Destruction In An Age of Terror: Living In the Second Nuclear Age," included Jonathan Schell, Author and Fellow at The Nation Institute and Senior Fellow at the Center for Globalization at Yale University; Frances FitzGerald, author of Fire In The Lake and Way Out There In The Blue and Danner.

The Forum also held a lively panel discussion on "War, the Press and U.S. Power: Diplomacy & Conflict in the Post-9/11 World." It was moderated by Prof. Danner. Strobe Talbott, President of The Brookings Institution and former Deputy Secretary of State; and Peter Tarnoff, Goldman Diplomat-in-Residence at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and Former Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs, were the panelists. That event is also available as streaming media.

Two other signature Goldman Forum events drew international attention and major media coverage.

The first was the "Media At War" conference and series of events that took place March 16 - 18, 2004 . Former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, CNN"s Christiane Amanpour and Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV joined 50 other journalists and foreign policy experts from around the world at the UC Berkeley campus for three days of panels, lectures and discussions on the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. The culmination was two Zellerbach Auditorium events.

On one evening Ms. Amanpour interviewed Mr. Blix in a wide-ranging discussion about "Weapons of Mass Destruction, Truth and Its Consequences." CNN and CSPAN broadcast the event. On the second night, an international panel of journalists, including ABC Nightline Executive Producer Leroy Sievers and New York Times Bagdad Bureau Chief John Burns, debated "Did We Get It Right? The Media At War In Iraq."

The second headliner event was a conversation by Goldman director Mark Danner with Mr. Morris, whose controversial film, "The Fog of War," had just been released, and its star subject, former Secretary of Defense McNamara. The two distinguished UC Berkeley alumni talked at length about the war and the making of the film. Robert M. Berdahl, Chancellor, UC Berkeley, and Dean Orville Schell presided. Co-sponsors included the Pacific Film Archives, The Commonwealth Club of California and Office of the Chancellor.
