- In Winter 2011 a rockslide closed Highway 1, cutting off driving access between Big Sur and the Monterey Peninsula. For people who lived, worked, or went to school in one place and had to get to the other, the only way to do so was during half-hour periods in the morning and the afternoon. As a construction crew worked on repairing the southbound lane, part of which had fallen into the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of pedestrians would walk on the inside lane.
