About Alexa Vaughn

I’m a freelance journalist who has been published in The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Washington Post, New York Times Magazine, The Bay Citizen, The East Bay Express and aired on KALW News in San Francisco. I can report stories through quick turnaround articles, long form print features, photo essays, radio pieces and video. Name the field, I’ve probably covered it. Most of my work has focused on business, politics, and incarceration issues. But I have occasional forays into the lives of musicians, foodies, strip club managers and pinball wizards.

With Measure Y, Oakland voted to invest in violence prevention instead of a full police force. I walked around an Oakland gang territory with one of the violence prevention groups, the Measure Y Street Outreach team, which is made up of men who grew up in the streets. They walk straight to the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods at its most dangerous hours to approach gang members and drug dealers about turning their lives around.
