For journalists and others interested in freedom of information issues

The calfoi list is an information pipeline for journalists and others interested in freedom of information and First Amendment legislation and issues in California.

Set up by the Freedom of Information Committee of the Northern California Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, the main goal of the list is to alert subscribers to government and court actions that threaten access to public meetings or records and to provide early notice of hearings and pending votes on FOI legislation. The list also is designed to relay word of actions by FOI interest groups and government agencies that will affect availability of public documents and openness in government. Finally, subscribers will be informed about other First Amendment issues of immediate concern to California journalists.

The califoi-list is an informational list, and we welcome postings from any interested parties. But in order to keep the list focused, we ask that people not use this as a forum for debate on FOI issues or on general topics in journalism or politics. We encourage people interested in those issues to use other discussion groups that deal with broader topics.

Subscribing to Calfoi

Subscribe to Calfoi either by filling out the following form below or by sending a blank email message to the mailing list subscription address: Calfoi-join@journalism.berkeley.edu.

If you choose to subscribe via email rather than through the form below, a password (for managing your subscription) will be generated for you (you can change it later if you like).

Note: Regardless how you subscribe, you must reply to the confirmation message you receive from the listserve in order to complete your subscription. Unconfirmed subscription requests will eventually dry up and blow away.

You will be sent email requesting confirmation, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you. This is a private list, which means that the list of members is not available to non-members.
