Getting Connected at the J-School

Many of our guests ask about Internet connectivity options during their visit to the J-School. Unfortunately, guest access is currently somewhat limited as determined by UC Berkeley (we are not, for example, allowed to share IP addresses with visitors).

The University is aware of the demand for connectivity and is taking steps to address it. Meanwhile, here's what he have to offer:

Fixed Terminals

While we do not currently offer a way to connect your laptop computer to our network, we do offer a workstation from which you can check any email account that offers a web-based interface (e.g. Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, .Mac mail, etc.). We deploy this computer for guest use at most major J-School events. Ask a J-School staffer if you don't see it.

In certain circumstances, we may be able to allow guest use of the Macintosh computers in our multimedia lab or front office area. However, you won't be able to install or use POP mail clients such as Eudora, Outlook, or Entourage (or any other custom software).

Wireless (Wi-Fi) (802.11b) Access

In many cases, we are able to provide guest access to the UC Berkeley Wi-Fi network. Guest Wi-Fi passes must be obtained in advance. If you need one, please consult with the event organizer to ensure that a WiFi guest pass has been arranged prior to your visit.
