April Dembosky (MJ '08) Wins Award at Third Coast International Audio Festival

The Third Coast International Audio Festival announced this week that J-School alumna April Dembosky (MJ '08) is a winner in the prestigious 2009 TC/Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Competition for her hour-long audio documentary, “Death Comes Home.”

Dembosky produced the audio documentary as her master’s thesis during her studies at the J-School. This year's nine winning documentaries were selected from 240 entries and included work from ten countries.

"Death Comes Home" is a portrait of three families who have chosen to forego funeral directors and prescribed memorials to instead care for their dead at home. Part of a growing national "home funeral" movement, these families are redefining America’s death rituals.

"Death Comes Home" was first presented as part of the University of California at Berkeley’s annual masters project showcase in May 2008. It aired on KQED public radio in San Francisco in August 2009. A half-hour version will air on the nationally distributed program, Soundprint Radio, in mid-October 2009.

While winners were announced this week, the organization will reveal which award Dembosky won during an awards ceremony at the end of October.
